Usk Astronomical Society
The Usk Astronomical Society was formed over 25 years ago and has met every week during term time since then. It has many telescopes and other astronomical equipment for use by members. We also use the equipment, including our new planetarium, in talks which members give to schools and other organisations. We have an extensive library of astronomical books and videos which can be borrowed by
members. Visits are organised to places of astronomical interest and we have an annual dinner at Christmas and a barbeque in the summer.

Usk Tapestry Group

In 2006 a group in Usk decided to organise a Tapestry for Usk. A community venture is what was envisaged, with as many people as possible taking part in its creation, from the fund-raising to the stitching. In April 2009, Usk’s new Centenary Hall was packed for the unveiling of the design. The tapestry, which will measure some 6ft 6” by 9ft has been designed by Llangybi artist, Susie Martin, who also designed the Abergavenny Tapestry. Come along to the Sessions House and help get Usk stitching.
Starter Sessions will be held at the Sessions House, Maryport St., on Saturday May 9th from 10am to 12 noon, and on Thursday May 14th, from 2pm to 4pm.

The Flying Shepherds
The Flying Shepherds

![]()
For over a decade the Flying Shepherds have become well known for their choral performances, both sacred and secular. Taking their inspiration from a shared love of vocal music, and their name from a musical mistake, the Flying Shepherds have given concerts and performed musical settings of the Mass and other Christian services throughout South Wales. We have a repertoire spanning music over five centuries, and perform ‘a capella’ or with organ and piano accompaniment. Are equally at home in village halls (a recent concert Let us be Merry included madrigals, poems and part songs of a light and festive nature) and cathedrals (September evensong with music from Tallis and Batten). Come from a variety of walks of life, and most members are local to the Usk area and sing with the Cwmbran Baroque Singers, Monmouth Choral Society, or the Gwent Bach Choir. Enquiries from potential new members are always welcome.

Usk Conservation and Environmental Group

Usk Conservation and Environmental Group was formed as a result of an urban ecology study of Maryport Street Usk. The group runs a wide variety of activities, all related to environmental issues both local and global. Practical projects include the establishment of a new wildflower meadow, clearing the old railway to create a walking and cycling route, and planting a new 1 acre area of woodland. The group also runs weekly walks, and talks during the winter with visiting speakers on a wide range of subjects. More recently UCEG has organised weekend breaks to other areas. In 2008 we won numerous awards for our contribution to conservation and the environment, including Biffaward, Volunteer Achievement Award and Keep Wales Tidy Award. We are always open to ideas for new projects, please contact us if you have a burning idea to which we could contribute! Come and join our friendly group, new members are always made welcome.

Usk Twinning Association
Usk Twinning Association
Usk is twinned with Graben-Neudorf in Germany. Usk Twinning Association is an arms-length body of the Town Council but acts quite independently. It receives no financial aid to support the activities associated with the regular exchanges between Usk and Graben-Neudorf and is heavily reliant on hosts in Usk.
2010 sees the celebration of 30 years of twinning with a symbolic exchange of visits. The Mayor has invited the Bürgermeister and a small party to visit us in April. A similar return visit to Graben-Neudorf is planned for the autumn

Usk Castle Players

Who are we?
It all started in 2005 with an idea to create a sound and light show at Usk Castle, to commemorate the Battle of Pwll Melyn in 1405 and to promote awareness of Usk Castle and it's historical importance.
The Usk Castle Pageant amateur dramatic group was formed and the resulting spectacular performance of 'Battle & Banquet' presented in the "son et lumiere" style, drew crowds from far and wide. Such was the success of "Battle & Banquet", the decision was taken to continue with an annual outdoor drama performance at Usk Castle.
Several successful productions have taken place since 2005 - you can read more about these and view photographs under productions.
In 2010 the decision was taken to re-name the 'Usk Castle Pageant amateur dramatic group as 'Usk Castle Players' to better reflect the current performance style.
Our Summer 2010 production 'Bonjour Bonjour' is a saucy, light hearted, wartime comedy with music, which places Usk Castle at the centre of both German invasion and Welsh resistance activity.
Performances: 9th July, 10th July, 11th July
Tickets will be available mid June - Come back soon for more information!
