The very competitive Large Village Class was won by an outstanding entry from Broughshane of Northern Ireland who in 2007 were Champion of Champions in Britain in Bloom and winner of Europe in Bloom. The silver gilt award recognises an excellent entry with the potential to achieve a gold medal. The 50 finalists in the 2009 competition were the best of over 1,000 communities which competed in regional competitions in 2008. The judges were very complimentary about the superb floral displays in Twyn Square, the school gardens, (especially the pupils they met on their tour ) and the impressive community support received by the Usk in Bloom Committee.
