£12,358 raised for Mayor's Appeal

The Mayor of Usk, Councillor Tony Kear, at his last formal event prior to the Council's AGM,  announced that the Mayor's Appeal had raised a record £12,358 which was to be split between St Anne's Hospice and other Local organisations. Cllr Kear thanked the Council's Town Clerks, Jenny Mee and Tracey Huxley and in particular Cllr Jane Clarke for all their hard work in arranging and supporting all of the fundraising events.  All three were presented with a bouquet of flowers with the help of his 4 year daughter Lucy. The events included the Balenavon Male Voice Choir, The New Harmony Singers with Usk's "singing guitarist plumber" Chris Moreton, The Valentines Ball with Mid Life Crisis as well as 2 quizzes held at the Nags Head and the Brain of Usk in the Memorial Hall.  Cllr Kear recalled memories of his London Marathon and how the support of the generous people of Usk during a difficult economic and financial period had inspired him to cross the finish line in the Mall. He particularly thanked Mr & Mrs Rob McHattie from the Priory Nursing Home in Llandogo who had generously donated £1,000 to launch the Appeal in May 2008.

St Anne's fund raising officer Brian Perrins received a cheque for £4,000. Other beneficiaries were, Usk in Bloom, Usk Junior Rugby Club, Usk Athletic Club, Usk Silver Screen, Usk Guiding Association, Usk PTA and Usk Youth Brass band.  Cllr Kear also surprised representatives of the new Usk Tapestry with a donation of £500 which they were not expecting as well as the Mayoress, his wife Kim,  with flowers expressing his appreciation for her loyal and loving support throught their 12 months in office.
