Action on HGV's through Usk
Monmouthshire County Council has agreed to a request from Usk Town Council to have CCTV installed overlooking the Historic Usk Bridge to help overcome the growing concerns over illegal HGV lories using Usk as a short cut and to help catch vehicles that damage the bridge.
In a letter to Usk Town Council, Paul Keeble, advised of the Monmouthshire County Council’s Intention to provide a CCTV Camera on the Woodside end or the Town Brideg;
“The camera will allow MCC to monitor any incidents on the bridge and also may be useful evidence contravention of the Weight Limit Traffic Order. It is proposed to install the camera in May / June and will assist the Authority to recover costs for any future damage to the parapet wall at this location and thereby reduce delays.”
Mayor of Usk, Cllr Tony Kear, who recently held discussions with Monmouth MP David Davies and the Chairman of Usk Chamber of Commerce to discuss the publics’ concerns said:-
“Usk Town Council is delighted to hear this news. The CCTV will act as a very visible deterrent to catch and potentially prosecute irresponsible haulage firms using Usk illegally. We accept that Usk is facing a very real and serious problem caused by the increasing number and size of heavy goods vehicles passing through the Town and particularly through Bridge Street. The Public have continually made that clear during my term of Office over the past 12 months where safety and reduced air pollution are paramount issues for residents, workers and visitors to Usk. In addition to the CCTV, a meeting is planned on 20th May with Monmouthshire County Council and Gwent Police to discuss further initiatives including the revision of the existing Road Traffic Orders and the introduction of a Permit based Lorry Watch Scheme. The co-operation between all parties here is very much appreciated. ”
Monmouth MP David Davies said
“I congratulate the Mayor and Usk town Council for raising this issue and pursuing it with myself and the local authority. I am pleased that steps are being taking to tackle the problem of HGVs using Usk as a short cut. The installation of the CCTV is a major step forward which will assist the Police in enforcing the Road Traffic Orders more effectively”
Chairman of the Usk Chamber of Commerce, David Sanson said:
“"The Chamber of Commerce are committed to finding a workable solution to the problem of our main shopping street being blighted by an excessive volume of Heavy Goods Vehicles. We are looking forward to working with Usk Town Council to this end, and are happy to commit our support. CCTV is the first initiative to be implemented and we are pleased that real progress is being made "
